Minty and gingery chai sounds AHMAZING. And very true, I need at least a cafe 'spicy' chai to get close to what I'm looking for, but homemade is always the best.
Love the lesson, I will enjoy a true chai tomorrow. Glad to know I’m not the only one with a mint situation. Does the variety of mint used matter? I have a German mint that is super strong.
Ahh loved that gingery hit as a kid, but don't really take chai anymore cos of a pesky lactose intolerance. Tried vegan milks but just can't seem to get the same kick.
I wouldn't have really understood this before I went to India. Now I'm obsessed with chai. Omg it's one of life's great joys. Thanks for this piece, Perzen!
Perzen the end of this had me dying with laughter. Before I even read I was wondering who the special David was haha.
Everything about this piece made me warm inside, from the stories about your mother to your debates about chai. I hope that one day we can enjoy a meal together. I admire your appreciation for the culture that surrounds food and the memories and companionship that form around it. I hope one day we get to share a meal together.
And I am so exited to make this chai recipe. It looks just like the chai recipe my dad used to make me except his sugar was not annotated with *to your liking, it was, *as sweet as possible haha.
I loved this so much! It’s a little cold this morning, and there’s still rain hanging in the air, which makes reading about all these chais feel even more warm and nostalgic. I actually never thought about how people make their chais in different ways. But of course it makes sense. I grew up with more of a chai masala (though I’m not big on cinnamon), but recently at my friends house she made it with lemongrass and I thought it was the best thing ever. Going to use your recipe and dabble with some chai this weekend. Loved all the imagery in this piece, really felt like I was in the garden with you 💚 I hope I can have some of your homemade chai one day!
*Starbucks named their pumpkin chai “pumpkin chai tea latte” and I was ranting about it for days (also ofc it’s delicious)
I love how this came together!! So intimate and personal, yet amusing—this definitely needed to be out there! Thank you for sharing your recipe with us!
Thank you for sharing your chai recipe - I’m going to make it today

This had to be said!
Chai is sacred and the ‘chai lattes’ don’t do it any justice. I like your idea of just calling the latter cinnamon lattes.
Lovely post, an ode to all the heart warming cups of chai <3
Yes! This turned out great. I love your story and your commitment to the craft. No latte shame felt here!!

sound great and now excited to make my very first chai!
